IF EdTech Student Privacy Policy

Modified: October 29, 2024

1. Overview

At IF EdTech, we are committed to protecting student privacy and ensuring that learning experiences are safe and secure. This Student Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect personal information of students when they use our services in an educational setting. IF EdTech provides products and tools to schools, districts, and teachers through our School Services, which are designed to support classroom learning and student engagement. In accordance with this policy, we use student information solely as a service provider, or “data processor,” to our school and district clients.

If you are a teacher or student using IF EdTech outside the classroom, please review our general Privacy Policy to learn more about our practices.

2. How We Handle Student Information

As a trusted partner to educators, IF EdTech carefully limits the collection and use of students’ personal information to only what is necessary for educational purposes. We comply with applicable privacy laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), California Student Online Personal Information Protection Act (SOPIPA), and other relevant U.S. state education privacy laws.

We adhere to the following practices:

  • No Sale of Student Data: We do not sell students’ personal information.
  • No Targeted Advertising: We do not serve or use students’ information for targeted ads.
  • No Profiling: We do not create personal profiles of students beyond what is needed to support authorized educational purposes.
  • Data Retention: We retain students’ personal information only for as long as is permitted under our agreements with schools and districts.
  • Supporting Parent and Student Rights: We assist our school clients in providing parents and eligible students with access to personal information and honoring requests such as data deletion or limiting further data use. Students and parents with privacy concerns should contact their school.

3. Student Information

3.1 Information We Collect

  • Nickname Usage: When students use IF EdTech tools to engage with content, we may collect a nickname that does not link to any other personal information.
  • Player ID Feature: Schools may choose to enable the Player ID feature, which can collect a student’s name (for K-12) and, for higher education students only, an email address for attendance and assessment purposes.
  • Teacher-Collected Information: Teachers may collect additional class-specific data such as attendance, test results, or answers. This information is used to facilitate teacher-student interaction and track learning progress.

3.2 Automatic Information Collection

IF EdTech collects certain technical information automatically, including IP address, device type, operating system, and browser details. This data helps us ensure functionality and security. We also use cookies to aid navigation and improve our services based on usage patterns.

3.3 Anonymized Data

We anonymize data collected automatically to support our product development and analytics efforts, ensuring that this information cannot be traced back to individual students. We do not attempt to re-identify anonymized data.

4. Data Security

IF EdTech follows strict security protocols to safeguard student information from unauthorized access or misuse. We use robust technical and organizational measures to protect personal data and ensure its privacy, confidentiality, and integrity, accounting for potential risks and data sensitivity.

5. Compliance with FERPA, COPPA, SOPIPA, and Education Privacy Laws

We comply with FERPA, COPPA, SOPIPA, and similar privacy regulations in our relationships with schools. Under FERPA, we act as a "school official," using students’ data solely to provide services as directed by schools or districts. Under COPPA, schools or districts provide any necessary parental consent for our tools used within the classroom.

6. GDPR Compliance

For School Services offered in the EU/EEA, IF EdTech processes student data as a "data processor" in line with the GDPR, while schools act as "data controllers." Our legal basis for processing data under GDPR stems from agreements with schools, ensuring functionality, security, and compliance. For more about these activities and GDPR rights, please review our general Privacy Policy.

7. Updates to This Policy

This Student Privacy Policy may be updated as we enhance our School Services. The most recent version is reflected by the date at the top of this document. We encourage schools, parents, and students to review this policy periodically for updates.
